OQ and TotalEnergies to partner on Oman renewables projects

MUSCAT, December 11, 2024 – Oman’s state-owned OQ Alternative Energy (OQ AE) will partner with TotalEnergies to develop 300 MW of renewable power in the country, the French energy giant announced on Wednesday.

Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has signed a long-term power purchase agreement to serve as offtaker for the electricity.

OQ AE will hold a 51% share in the projects, while TotalEnergies will hold 49%.

The projects will include two 100-MW wind projects, located at the Amin and West Nimr fields in southern Oman, named Riyah-1 and Riyah-2.

Also in the cards is North Solar, a 100-MW solar project located in Saih Nihaydah in the country’s north.

Oman is targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“PDO’s journey towards sustainability was firmly established with previous groundbreaking initiatives, including the Amin Solar IPP Power Plant and the Rima Water Treatment Project,” PDO managing director Dr Aflah Al Hadhrami said.

“These projects, alongside the ones signed today, continue to reshape Oman’s energy landscape by blending technological innovation with environmental stewardship.”

OQ AE, which bills itself as “the National Champion for Clean Energy in Oman,” is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NOC established to advance the country’s net-zero-related goals.

TotalEnergies’ previous work on developing renewables in Oman includes the country’s largest solar PV system built to provide power for a desalination plant, in the city of Sur, in joint venture with Veolia.
