Phillips 66 converts California refinery to run on solar
HOUSTON, December 11, 2024 – Phillips 66 will join forces with clean energy company NextEra Energy Resources to power its refinery in Rodeo, California, with a new 30.2-MW solar facility, Phillips 66 announced on Tuesday.
The solar facility will be owned and operated by NextEra Energy Resources and be constructed on approximately 88 acres of land owned by Phillips 66 adjacent to its Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex, a refinery which produces renewable fuels such as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
It will consist of more than 70,000 solar modules capable of generating approximately 60,000 MWh per year of electricity. Solar power will reduce the refinery’s grid power demand by 50% and is expected to avoid approximately 33,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, beginning in Q1 2025.
“This solar facility not only underscores our commitment to advancing a lower-carbon future but also enhances our energy infrastructure,” said Zhanna Golodryga, executive vice-president of emerging energy and sustainability for Phillips 66.
Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex began processing only lower-carbon intensity feedstocks in March 2022. Its inputs include used cooking oil, fats, greases and vegetable oil.
