QatarEnergy hits third significant find in Namibia

MUSCAT, March 7, 2023 – QatarEnergy along with its partners have hit Namibia’s third oil discovery at a deepwater well in the south of the country, the Qatari NOC announced on Monday.

The Jonker-1X well was drilled by the Odfjell Deepsea Bollsta semi-submersible rig to depths of 6,168 metres.

The well is located on the PEL-39 concession in Blocks 2913A and 2914B, which sits on the Orange Basin.

Shell is operator of the concession with a 45% working interest, along with partners QatarEnergy with a 45% stake and National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia with a 10% stake.

The consortium has yet to confirm the estimated size of the find, with partners stating further appraisal work is necessary.

The discovery follows two finds in Namibia in February 2022, including same consortium hitting oil at the Graff-1x well in the PEL-39 concession.

Later that month, a separate consortium led by TotalEnergies made a light oil discovery at the Venus-1x well in the PEL-56 concession.
