QatarEnergy orders 17 LNG carriers

DOHA, September 27, 2023 – QatarEnergy has signed an agreement with Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to build 17 LNG carriers for USD 3.9 billion, Qatar’s NOC announced on Wednesday.

This adds to the company’s previous order of 60 vessels, bringing the total number of confirmed new LNG vessels to 77.

The vessels will be used on QatarEnergy’s North Field expansion project and the Golden Pass LNG project.

“These 17 LNG carriers will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to the highest technical and environmental standards and specifications,” said Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi.

“The vessels are designed to achieve optimal fuel efficiency and significant reduction in carbon emissions,”

QatarEnergy expects more orders for further LNG vessels to follow.

The NOC plans to boost Qatar’s LNG capacity from 77 million tonnes per year to 100 million tonnes per year by around 2026 or 2027.
