QatarEnergy to work with GE on CCS roadmap

QatarEnergy has signed an MoU with General Electric to develop carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology at Ras Laffan Industrial City and create a national carbon capture roadmap, the NOC announced Wednesday.

The Ras Laffan Industrial City is located 80 kilometres northeast of Doha close to Qatar’s North Field development, which the country is currently investing more than USD 50 million to expand. The energy city hosts 80 of General Electric’s gas turbines.

The national carbon reduction roadmap will include development of CCS technology, utilisation of hydrogen and potential usage of ammonia in gas turbines.

QatarEnergy has set a goal to capture more than 11 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year in Qatar by 2035 under its current sustainability strategy. The NOC has also pledged to reduce carbon intensity from its LNG facilities by 35% and upstream facilities by 25% by 2035.
