Republic of Congo building $600-million refinery

Republic of Congo has launched construction of a USD 600-million refinery set to transform the country’s downstream landscape.

Located near the city of Pointe-Noire, the Atlantic Petrochemical Refinery is expected to address the country’s fuel shortage problem, with a capacity of 110,000 bpd once complete. It will also diversify Congolese exports away from crude oil.

The facility’s products will include petrol, aviation fuel, LPG, diesel, lubricants, bitumen and kerosene. Its price tag was reported by AFP based on a government source.

Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso and Minister of Hydrocarbons Jean-Marc Thystère Tchicaya attended the groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday.

At present, the country produces around 340,000 bopd, but has only one refinery: Congolaise de Raffinage (Coraf), which has a capacity of 21,000 bpd.
