MANILA, October 6, 2015 – Shell Philippines has initiated gas production at a newly installed platform at the Malampaya gasfield, located 50 kilometres offshore Palawan in the Philippines, the company announced in a statement Monday.

Gas produced from the Malampaya field will be used as feedstock to generate electricity for the province of Luzon.

The depletion compression platform weighs 7,750 tonnes and was installed adjacent to a Malampaya shallow-water platform operated by the super-major – the first offshore unit of its kind to be constructed and designed in the Philippines.

The depletion compression platform was installed to maintain gas production for existing gas sales agreements, as part of the third phase of the Malampaya development. The programme will provide between 35 percent and 40 percent of Luzon’s energy supply.
