Sinopec to build a chemicals complex in Kazakhstan

ASTANA, May 22, 2023 – Sinopec has agreed to terms with state-owned KazMunayGaz to build a gas-based petrochemicals complex in Atyrau, Kazakhstan, the Chinese energy giant announced via Twitter on Thursday.

The complex will process ethane from a nearby gasfield into ethylene, with an expected production capacity of 1.28 million tonnes per year.

 

Additionally, two polyethylene facilities will be built, each with processing capacities of 625,000 tonnes per year.

The deal was penned on the sidelines of the China-Central Asia Summit in Xian, located in the Chinese province of Shaanxi.

The project’s FID is expected to be made in 2024.
