TotalEnergies breaks ground on $250-million Iraq gas facility
BASRA, January 10, 2025 – TotalEnergies and partners have launched construction of a USD 250-million gas processing facility in Iraq’s Basra region, the company announced on Friday.
ArtawiGas25, being built under the wider USD 10-billion Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), is the initial processing facility for associated gas from the Ratawi field.
It will process 50 mcf per day of gas that was previously flared. A reduction in flaring at the field will be seen as early as end-2025.
The gas will supply local power plants, covering the demand of approximately 200,000 households in the Basra region, the French energy giant said.
TotalEnergies operates the project with a 45% stake, while Basra Oil Company holds 30% and QatarEnergy holds 25%.
The GGIP is a multi-energy project designed to enhance the development of Iraq’s natural resources and improve the country’s electricity supply. It includes a large-scale gas processing plant, with a first phase of 300 mcf per day that will recover gas being flared on three oilfields and supply gas to 1.5 GW of power generation capacity.
