TotalEnergies joins 4 GW of North Sea wind projects
Germany ESSEN, October 7, 2024 – TotalEnergies will take a 50% stake in two RWE-operated offshore wind projects in the German North Sea with a combined capacity of 4 GW, the French company said on Monday.
The projects are situated 110 kilometres off the coast of Germany and include N-9.1 and N-9.2, both with capacities of 2 GW. They have each undergone preliminary studies and are to be commissioned in 2031 and 2032, respectively.
German energy player RWE was awarded the projects in August under 25-year licences extendable to 35 years.
TotalEnergies is seeking to develop wind projects in the area as a hub to optimise costs and efficiency. It has existing stakes in the N-12.1, N-11.2 and O-2.2 projects.
The two companies also partner on the OranjeWind project in the Netherlands.
“This new partnership contributes to our integrated development in the German electricity market, the largest in Europe, and will enable TotalEnergies to provide green electrons to decarbonize the country’s electricity and industry,” said Olivier Jouny, senior vice-president of renewables at TotalEnergies.
