TotalEnergies kicks off Ubeta gas project in Nigeria

PORT HARCOURT, June 21, 2024 – TotalEnergies and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation have reached a FID for the development of the Ubeta gasfield in Nigeria, TotalEnergies announced on Thursday.

Located within the OML 58 licence, the Ubeta gas and condensate field will be developed with a new cluster of six wells. Production is expected to start in 2027 and should reach a plateau of 8.5 mcm (300 mcf) per day, or about 70,000 boepd including condensates.

The OML 58 onshore licence is located 80 kilometres northwest of Port Harcourt and contains two fields currently in production, the Obagi oilfield and the Ibewa gas and condensate field.

Gas currently being produced in OML 58 is supplied to the Nigerian domestic gas market and to the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) liquefaction plant in Bonny Island, in which TotalEnergies holds a 15% interest. Gas from Ubeta will also be supplied to the facility, and processing capacity is currently being expanded from 22 million to 30 million tpy.

“Ubeta is the latest in a series of projects developed by TotalEnergies in Nigeria, most recently Ikike and Akpo West. Ubeta fits perfectly with our strategy of developing low-cost and low-emission projects, and will contribute to the Nigerian economy through higher NLNG exports”, said Mike Sangster, senior vice-president for Africa at TotalEnergies.

TotalEnergies expects to reduce the carbon intensity of the OML 58 project through a 5-MW solar plant currently under construction at the Obite site and the electrification of the drilling rig.
