UAE’s Barakah nuclear plant Unit 1 at 50%

RUWAIS, September 24, 2020 – The Unit 1 reactor of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant has achieved 50% of its electricity production capacity, Nawah Energy Company announced on Tuesday.

The 5.6-GW Barakah plant will supply 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs and is making history as the first nuclear power plant in the Arab world. Its construction began in 2012.

The Barakah project “has been hailed as a model for peaceful nuclear power by the international community,” H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, the UAE’s minister of energy and industry, told The Energy Year in 2019.

The plant is under joint development by Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and Korea Electric Power Corporation through their Nawah Energy Company venture. Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation made headlines on Thursday when all of its shares were transferred to holding ADQ.
