Uganda announces upcoming oil and gas bid round

Uganda is planning to open its third oil and gas bid round in May 2023, Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu announced on Friday.

Details on how many and what concessions will be offered were not disclosed.

Commercial oil deposits were first discovered in Uganda in 2006 in an area next to Democratic Republic of Congo.

In February 2022, TotalEnergies and CNOOC reached an FID for the Tilenga and Kingfisher oil developments and the associated East African Crude Oil Pipeline.

Additionally, a USD 4.5-billion oil refinery in Hoima province with a capacity of 60,000 bpd is being planned by Albertine Graben Energy Consortium Partners with an FID expected this year. Petroleum will be sourced from TotalEnergies and CNOOC’s Lake Albert assets.

The Ugandan government intends to begin production of its hydrocarbons assets in 2025.
