US oil rig numbers near 2015 levels

USA

HOUSTON, January 2, 2017 – The number of oil rigs in the US increased by 5 last week, reaching 525 units. According to Baker Hughes data released over the weekend, the US oil rig count is now 11 shy of numbers seen in 2015.

The number of gas rigs in the US was up too, hitting 132. Baker Hughes counted 658 US onshore rigs in total last week, down 40 from last year. This was mostly due to the drop in gas rigs, which number 30 less compared with the same period in 2015.

While the Canadian rig was down by 67 to 157, the figure still marks a significant increase over last year, when Baker Hughes counted 83 units. The international rig count hit 925, down by 184.
