Oman partners on geologic hydrogen

MUSCAT, September 28, 2023 – Eden GeoPower has signed an MoU with Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals to lead development of stimulated geologic hydrogen in the country, the US-based green resources entity announced on Tuesday.

Under the deal, Eden will build the world’s first international test site for research and demonstration of stimulated geologic hydrogen.

The company plans to pilot its electrical reservoir stimulation technology at the new facility.

The signing was attended by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals H.E. Mohsin Al Hadhrami.

“Geologic hydrogen fits perfectly in the Sultan’s strategy to provide the world with secure and low carbon energy,” said Al Hadhrami.

“The discussion with Eden which started at the beginning of the year […] is a sign of solid partnership with the USA.”

Geologic hydrogen occurs when water interacts with iron-rich rocks under anoxic conditions. The process can be stimulated by drilling and injecting water into the earth.

Oman’s ophiolite terrain makes it an appealing location for hydrogen research and commercial extraction.

In February 2023, the government designated specific blocks for the development of hydrogen and renewables.

In March 2023, Oman Hydrogen signed six agreements with international players to build local hydrogen projects worth more than USD 20 billion. These developments are expected to be commissioned by 2030.

Oman plans to produce 1 million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2030, 3.75 million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2040 and 8.5 million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2050.
