Equinor makes new Norwegian Sea discovery
Norway STAVANGER, September 10, 2024 – Equinor and licence partners Petoro, Vår Energi and TotalEnergies EP Norge have made a new gas and condensate discovery in development well 6406/2-L-2 H, 260 kilometres southwest of Brønnøysund in the Norwegian Sea, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate announced on Tuesday.
The well was drilled by the Transocean Spitsbergen rig in the Haltenbanken Vest Unit in the Norwegian Sea. The drilling was conducted in connection to the Lavrans discovery, currently under development in the Kristin field.
The well was drilled to respective measured and vertical depths of 6,075 and 5,045 metres below sea level, encountering a gas and condensate column of about 30 metres in the lower parts of the Tilje Formation, with moderate to good reservoir properties. Gas and condensate were also proven in the upper parts of the Tilje Formation in a sandstone reservoir with moderate to poor reservoir properties.
Preliminary estimates place the size of the discovery in the range of 2-4 mcm (70.6-141.2 mcf) of recoverable oil equivalent. According to the directorate, the licensees will consider connecting the discovery to the infrastructure being developed for Lavrans.
Following the permanent plugging of the wellbore, Transocean Spitsbergen will proceed to drill production well 6406/2-L-2 AY1H in the same location.
