NNPC, CMEC sign MoU on funding the Gwagwalada power plant
LAGOS, September 10, 2024 – NNPC Limited and China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) signed an MoU regarding the funding of Phase I of the Gwagwalada power plant, NNPC announced on Saturday.
The MoU signing took place on Thursday between Olalekan Ogunleye, deputy managing director of NNPC , and Zhang Daguang, chairman of CMEC Nigeria. The Gwagwalada independent power plant (GIPP) project, also known as the Abuja independent power plant, is a 350-MW power plant and one of the main projects of the overarching Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline project.
The AKK Gas Pipeline project comprises a USD 2.9-billion, 614-kilometre pipeline system capable of carrying gas to produce 3.6 GW of energy. The project includes intermediate and terminal gas facilities, one of which is GIPP. The pipeline is expected to be finished by Q1 of 2025.
Upon completion of Phase I, GIPP will provide Nigeria with additional power, industrial development, job opportunities and reduced gas flaring.
