Saudi Arabian Drilling Academy

The Saudi Arabian Drilling Academy (SADA) is a non-profit technical and academic institution created by Saudi Aramco in partnership with the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) and oil and gas sector stakeholders that support the academy financially.

SADA offers apprenticeship programmes to high school graduates in drilling and exploration disciplines, equipping them with the training necessary to work in entry-level positions at the companies that sponsor their admission. The academy provides enrolled students with housing, healthcare, a monthly stipend and remedial classes where necessary.

The academy operates out of a 70,000-square-metre campus that can accommodate 520 trainees. It is equipped with 26 smart classrooms, an operational training rig, rig and well-control simulators, computer and testing labs and four repair workshops with spare parts.

SADA offers two main programmes.

The Drilling Operator Diploma is a programme designed to train entry-level rig operators for the oil and gas sector. It provides participants with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for land or offshore rig positions, starting with minimal or no prior experience.

The Well Service Operator Diploma is a programme that caters to entry-level junior operators in the oil and gas domain. It encompasses a broad spectrum of theoretical topics in onshore and offshore oilfield service operations and includes practical assignments that allow students to gain firsthand experience in standard and advanced well operations such as:

  • Pumping and cementing
  • Wireline logging
  • Slickline services
  • Directional drilling
  • Measurement while drilling
  • Logging while drilling
  • Coiled tubing operations
  • Casing and tubular running
  • Mud logging
  • Completions

The SADA management team maintains regular contact with oil and gas operators and oilfield services companies in Saudi Arabia – including international references such as Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Saipem and Weatherford -– to understand their operational needs and gather insights to adjust the academy’s training programmes to the latest requirements from the sector.
