Galp embarks on new exploration in Namibia’s Orange Basin

WINDHOEK, October 28, 2024 – Portugal’s Galp Energia has commenced a second exploration and appraisal campaign on blocks 2813A and 2814B in Namibia’s prolific Orange Basin, licence partner Sintana Energy announced on Thursday.

Galp has spudded the first appraisal well in a new drilling programme that, according to Sintana’s announcement, could potentially include up to two exploration wells and two appraisal wells.

The inaugural exploration campaign launched in Q4 2023 resulted in multiple discoveries of light oil in high-quality reservoir sands, leading to an initial oil-in-place estimate of more than 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent. This new effort aims to provide additional insight into the scope and quality of Mopane’s resources.

Initial analyses suggest that the reservoirs have good porosities, high pressures and high permeabilities in large hydrocarbon columns with very low oil viscosity and no carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide.

Located near Namibia’s border with South Africa, blocks 2813A and 2814B are governed by Petroleum Exploration License 83, which is operated by Galp with an 80% interest. The remaining 20% is shared equally by Custos Energy, which is partly owned by Sintana Energy, and the National Petroleum Company of Namibia.
