Equinor expands exploration presence off Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 17, 2025 – Equinor has secured a new exploration block offshore Brazil, reinforcing its position in one of the company’s core international markets, the company said on Tuesday.

The S-M-1617 block was awarded during Brazil’s 5th Open Permanent Concession bid round.

The licence was awarded on a 100% basis with a signature bonus of around USD 5.5 million. It lies 60 kilometres from another block already held by the company.

Equinor plans to carry out geological and geophysical studies ahead of future exploration activities. The new acreage adds to its existing asset base in the Santos basin.

“We are pleased with our success in today’s bidding round, securing a new exploration opportunity in Brazil – a core country in our international portfolio,” Equinor senior vice-president and Brazil country manager Veronica Coelho said. “This award provides us with longevity options for Brazil and demonstrates our continuous commitment and appetite to grow in the country.”

Equinor has been present in Brazil since 2001. Its portfolio includes the Peregrino oilfield, the Bacalhau development, and exploration assets in the Campos and Santos basins. The company is also investing in solar projects and offshore wind, aiming to support Brazil’s energy transition.
