EnBW partners with Acwa on hydrogen corridor to Germany

RIYADH, February 2, 2026 – Germany’s EnBW has signed an MoU with Saudi Arabia’s Acwa to establish an import pathway to bring Saudi ammonia to Germany for use by hydrogen projects, Reuters reported on Sunday.

The agreement was signed during a visit to Saudi Arabia by a German delegation headed up by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche. In addition to EnBW and Acwa, the deal includes VNG, one of Germany’s largest natural gas importers and wholesalers, and the German port of Rostock.

Under the MoU, VNG, which is 84.4% owned by EnBW, will build a cracker in Rostock to extract hydrogen from imported ammonia for integration into the national hydrogen core network, with system operations expected to begin in 2030. Leipzig-headquartered VGN operates a 7,700-kilometre gas transmission network and four gas storage facilities.

“The signing of this MoU is an important milestone for all partners involved. We are driving forward the establishment of a reliable import corridor for green ammonia from Saudi Arabia to Germany,” said Georg Stamatelopoulos, CEO of EnBW.

EnBW is a major German energy supplier involved in electricity generation, trading and the operation of power grid infrastructure. The company plans to invest up to EUR 50 billion by 2030 and bring the share of renewables in its generation portfolio to around 80%.

Acwa is a Saudi developer of power and desalination infrastructure with increasing involvement in green hydrogen and ammonia projects worldwide.
