ReconAfrica begins production testing at Namibia discovery
CALGARY, June 10, 2026 – Reconnaissance Energy Africa and partners Namcor and BW Energy have begun production testing at the Kavango West 1X discovery onshore Namibia, ReconAfrica said on Monday.
The programme will isolate and test six optimised intervals covering approximately 420 metres of hydrocarbons-bearing section across the Huttenburg and Elandshoek formations. ReconAfrica plans to test three zones in the lower Elandshoek formation and three in the shallower Huttenburg formation, with each test lasting up to 10 days.
Downhole perforation work is underway with SLB and Halliburton, and ReconAfrica expects to release results by late July 2026. If successful, the well would be temporarily abandoned and kept available as a future producing well.
“We are very excited to be conducting the first cased production test in Namibia. This test is a pivotal point in unlocking the commerciality of the Damara Fold Belt and has been designed to test for hydrocarbon phase and deliverability,” said Brian Reinsborough, president and CEO of ReconAfrica.
The company added that it is preparing permitting and site work for the Kavango West 2A appraisal well, which it plans to spud before the end of Q3 2026, pending final approvals.
ReconAfrica is a Canadian oil and gas explorer with operations onshore Namibia, Botswana and Angola, as well as in the Ngulu shallow-water block offshore Gabon.
