ADNOC partners on landmark geothermal project

ABU DHABI, August 14, 2023 – ADNOC and district cooling entity National Central Cooling Company (Tabreed) have partnered to harness geothermal energy for cooling systems at Masdar City, UAE, the Emirati NOC announced on Monday.

The project involves utilising heat from wells that exceed 90 degrees Celsius with flow rates of 100 litres per second. Heated water will pass through an absorption cooling system to produce chilled water for Tabreed’s cooling network at Masdar City.

The project will account for 10% of the city’s cooling needs.

In January 2023, ADNOC allocated USD 15 billion towards decarbonization projects by 2030, which will help fund the project.

The development is the first of its kind in the gulf region and is in line with the UAE’s National Energy Strategy, which looks to grow renewable energy capacity to 14 GW by 2030.

In July 2023, ADNOC rolled back its target to have net-zero carbon emissions by five years to 2045.
