AMEA Power commissions Africa’s largest wind farm in Egypt
RAS GHAREB, June 2, 2025 – Dubai-based AMEA Power has brought online a 500-MW wind power plant in Egypt’s Red Sea Governorate, the largest operational wind facility in Africa, the company announced on Monday.
Located in Ras Ghareb, the Amunet Wind Power Plant is a joint venture between AMEA Power (60%) and Sumitomo Corporation (40%). It will generate around 2,500 GWh of clean electricity per year – enough to power about 500,000 homes – while offsetting 1.4 million tonnes per year of carbon dioxide emissions.
The project was completed 2.5 months ahead of schedule and follows the company’s November 2024 commissioning of a 500-MW solar PV plant in Aswan Governorate.
Financing was led by a consortium including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, the International Finance Corporation, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank and Standard Chartered Bank, with support from Nippon Export and Investment Insurance and the Commercial International Bank of Egypt.
“The commissioning of the 500-MW Amunet Wind Power Plant in the Red Sea Governorate marks a significant milestone for AMEA Power and Egypt. Bringing 1 GW of clean energy online in such a short period is a tremendous achievement and a reflection of our deep commitment to delivering impactful renewable energy solutions. This is the future of power generation in Africa – clean, inclusive and transformational,” said AMEA Power chairman Hussain Al Nowais.
AMEA Power develops, owns and operates renewable generation and energy storage assets in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The company has more than 2.6 GW in operation or under construction and a project pipeline exceeding 6 GW.
