Argentina to tender Vaca Muerta train

BUENOS AIRES, April 19, 2018 – Argentina is planning to extend a cargo train line to Vaca Muerta, local and international media reported on Wednesday.

“At the beginning of May the preliminary information of the tender about the economic and legal format of the Norpatagonico Train will be presented,” Omar Gutierrez, Neuquen province’s governor, told local newspaper LMNeuquen.

An earlier Bloomberg report estimated the cost of the project at USD 500 million.

The train service will help reduce costs for the transportation of sand and fracking chemicals to Vaca Muerta as E&P companies seek to ramp up output, the reports added. Argentina is hoping to raise its oil and gas production by about 50% by 2030, and it has bet heavily on shale development to further this goal.
