Avant to build terminals in Mexico

Energy infrastructure firm Avant Energy will construct a USD 200-million terminal network for petroleum product distribution in Mexico, the company announced on Wednesday in a press statement.

The Supera network will allow for the transportation and storage of refined petroleum products between a marine terminal at the Port of Altamira in Tamaulipas state, as well as an inland terminal in the Bajío region of north-central Mexico.

“We are proud to develop this unique infrastructure network that provides superior logistics solutions to connect the high-growth Bajío region with the US gulf coast, the largest and most efficient market in the world for refined products,” said Luis Farias, CEO of Avant Energy. “The energy reform has allowed new players such as Avant Energy to participate in open markets, which will allow increased efficiencies to the supply chain and ultimately benefit the consumer.”

Avant’s marine terminal, to be operated by US logistics company Savage, will be able to receive Panamax size vessels and store up to 1.2 million barrels of refined products. The facility will also include a direct connection to a rail system operated by Kansas City Southern de México. Meanwhile, the 450,000-barrel Bajío terminal will receive loads through the rail system and include a dispatch facility.

“This network will open the door to more efficient supply and transportation of refined petroleum products from US refiners into Mexico’s north-central region, where it is needed,” said Kirk Aubry, Savage president and CEO.

The construction of both terminals is set to begin in Q3 2018, with commercial operations scheduled for 2019.
