Azerbaijan launches first leg of SGC

BAKU, May 29, 2018 – Azerbaijan has put on stream the first leg of the Southern Gas Corridor that is to transport Caspian Sea gas to Europe via Turkey, international media reported on Tuesday.

“With this project we are creating a new energy map of Europe,” said Ilham Aliyev, the country’s president, cited by AFP.

The 3,500-kilometre project will tap Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz 2 gasfield and will merge with the Trans-Anatolian pipeline that will carry the gas all the way to Italy, bypassing Russia. It is expected to come on stream in 2020.

The news came days after Turkey and Russia struck a deal for the construction of the land portion of the rival TurkStream pipeline, which will carry Russian gas via Turkey to Europe.
