Brazil’s IBAMA denies Total drilling request

BRASíLIA, May 30, 2018 – The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) has for the fourth time denied French super-major Total’s request to drill in the Foz do Amazonas area, international media reported Tuesday.

Though IBAMA had previously stated that the fourth application would be the last before suspension, the institute has decided to give Total more time to provide additional information.

Total has been seeking approval to drill in the area for more than four years. The company’s plans have been delayed due to the discovery of coral in Foz do Amazonas, as well as other environmental concerns.
