BP “grossly negligent” for Gulf spill

HOUSTON, September 10, 2014 – On Sunday, the UK government expressed support for BP’s appeal against a US court decision that found the company “grossly negligent” for the 2010 Macondo disaster and subsequent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and exposed the UK based company to a further $18 billion in fines on top of a current bill of $42 billion.

BP said it will appeal the decision on the penalty under the Clean Water Act at the District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana at the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

The UK government said the recent decision did not represent a “vigorous and fair resolution of disputes.”
