Egypt's fuel card

Smartcard fuel tracking cuts smuggling

CAIRO, September 17, 2014 – Egypt’s new smartcard fuel purchasing and tracking system for trucks and tankers has cut smuggling of illicit fuel into Egypt by 60 percent, according to the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation

The national oil company noted the scale of the problem in a statement, “The oil sector faces an annual 20 percent smuggling rate of the total amount of fuel allocated for the Egyptian market.”

The black-market fuels are exported into Egypt through tunnels from Sinai or through ships in the Gulf of Suez.

GPS devices and smart cards in trucks and tankers used to distribute products to retail outlets are now combating smuggling of diesel, gasoline and lubricants. This allows for the active monitoring of distribution from refineries, to depots, to fueling stations.
