The South Stream pipeline

EU energy chief to raise South Stream topic in Russia talks

BRUSSELS , January 14, 2015 – EU vice-president for energy Energy Union Maros Sefcovic will be in Russia this week for meetings that the EU hopes will shed light on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision last month to scrap the South Stream natural gas pipeline project. Sefcovic will sit down with Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, Energy Minister Alexander Novak and Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller today to discuss the current situation.

At a press conference alongside Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov on Tuesday, Sefcovic said he would enquire about the Russian plans and “how they want to address this complex issue of supplies of Russian gas to Europe.” Borisov, on his part, expressed he hopes for “the continuation of the work on the South Stream.”
