Colombia’s Ecopetrol makes two offshore gas finds

BOGOTá, February 23, 2024 – Colombia’s Ecopetrol on Thursday announced the discovery of two new gas deposits while working to assess the size of the offshore Orca-1 discovery, which was smaller than expected.

The Orca-1 discovery was made in 2014 in partnership with Brazil’s Petrobras. It is situated in the Tayrona block, around 40 kilometres offshore in Colombia’s Caribbean waters, lying in water depths of 706 metres.

The two new discoveries, found in separate reservoirs, have raised hopes that additional finds can be made in the Colombian deepwater. Although the country’s current administration has halted the award of new oil and gas licences in a shift away from fossil fuels, Ecopetrol is striving to maximise the yield of existing licences to forestall a potential loss of gas self-sufficiency.

The appraisal drilling campaign was conducted with the Noble Discoverer semi-submersible drillship.
