Egypt gas shortage causing blackouts

CAIRO, August 20, 2014 – Egypt has been suffering from growing electricity blackouts in Cairo and across the nation.

The country’s power shortages are caused by a lack of natural gas, according to comments the managing director of Egyptian Electric Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency (EgyptERA) made to Daily News Egypt on Sunday.

In the interview, EgyptERA‘s Hafez El-Salmawy told the newspaper that power stations receive only 110 mcm (3.9 bcf) per day but need 125 mcm (4.4 bcf)

Oil and gas exploration has virtually ceased because Egypt is currently trying to structure repayments to oil and gas producers who were left owed billions are the overthrow of successive governments.
