ASTANA, June 12, 2023 – Eni has decided to build a 250-MW hybrid renewables-gas plant in Zhanaozen, Kazakhstan, the Italian energy giant announced on Thursday.

Eni will partner with state-owned KazMunayGas to build the project comprising a solar plant, a wind farm and a gas plant.

The facility is the first of its kind in Kazakhstan.

The move was decided at a meeting between Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

“Eni is strongly committed to strengthen its leadership in Kazakhstan energy transition, accelerating the evolution of its business model,” said Descalzi.

Cost and timeline of the project were not disclosed.

Eni has been active in Kazakhstan since 1992. The company is the joint operator of the Karachaganak gasfield and an equity partner in projects in the northern Caspian Sea, including the Kashagan giant gasfield.

Additionally, Eni operates the 150-MW Arm Wind project in the country, which is under construction.
