Iberdrola to build Europe’s largest green ammonia plant

Spain

MADRID, June 9, 2023 – Iberdrola has signed a framework agreement with US energy trader Trammo to produce and distribute 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year, the Spanish renewables company announced on Friday.

The deal will facilitate the construction of Europe’s first industrial green ammonia plant, which will require investments of around USD 806 million.

Deliveries are set to begin from 2026.

Plans for the facility include construction of a 500-MW renewables unit.

The plant will be located in Southern Europe, but a specific location was not disclosed.

“When you bring together one of the world’s largest renewable energy developers and the world’s largest seaborne trader of anhydrous ammonia, innovative projects like this can quickly become viable,” said Millán García-Tola, global head of green hydrogen of Iberdrola.

“For the past year, we have been operating Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant, which gives us the experience and understanding of the processes and technology to scale-up quickly to these larger projects.”

Iberdrola currently operates Europe’s largest electrolyser in Puertollano, Spain, which has a 20-MW capacity.

Iberdrola currently produces 40 GW from renewable plants around the world and plans to ramp up power generation capacity from renewable projects to 80 GW by 2030.
