First ultra-deepwater gas find in China

China

BEIJING, February 26, 2016 – China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has made the first ultra-deepwater gas discovery in China, the company said on Friday. The Lingshui 18-1 exploration well, drilled in 1,688 m of water in the western area of the South China Sea, was able to confirm a gas find. Water depths of more than 1,500 m are designated ultra-deepwater at CNOOC.

The gas find follows the 2014 gas discovery made by the Linshui 17-2 well in deepwater in the Qiongdongnan Basin. Working at 1,450 m, the exploration well was drilled to a total depth of 3,510 m, where it struck a 55-m thick reservoir.
