GEIL completes first crude export from new terminal in Nigeria
PORT HARCOURT, June 9, 2025 – Green Energy International Limited (GEIL) has completed the first crude oil export from its Otakikpo onshore terminal in Nigeria, the company said on Monday.
The inaugural shipment was carried out on June 8, 2025, using a vessel chartered by Shell, which transported the maiden cargo from the Otakikpo marginal field in Rivers State. The Otakikpo terminal is the first privately constructed and managed onshore crude export terminal in Nigeria in over 50 years.
“We are deeply grateful to all our partners and commend the dedication of our indigenous technical team, who worked relentlessly to bring this project to life. This is a moment of pride for Nigeria and a milestone for African-owned energy enterprises,” GEIL chairman Anthony Adegbulugbe said.
The terminal can currently hold 750,000 barrels in storage and is equipped for the export of 360,000 barrels per day. GEIL plans to expand the terminal’s storage capacity to three million barrels. The first phase of the project saw more than USD 400 million in investment, with total development costs expected to exceed USD 1.3 billion.
GEIL highlighted the strategic value of the terminal, which can support the evacuation of crude from over 40 stranded oilfields in the region, holding an estimated three billion barrels of oil equivalent. The facility is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s onshore production infrastructure, reduce dependence on offshore terminals and attract new investments.
