India gas output to reach new highs

NEW DELHI, October 15, 2014 – Last week, India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced that the country’s domestic gas production will rise to 59 bcm (2.1 tcf) per day by March 2019, up from its current 36 bcm (1.27 tcf) per day. The announcement comes as India’s power and fertiliser plants are facing operational challenges due to a critical shortage of gas feedstocks.

It is estimated that most of the domestic gas production increase will come from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Oil India (OIL) and the production sharing contracts’ regime blocks. ONGC is expected to increase its output to 35 bcm (1.24 tcf) by 2019, OIL to 4 bcm (141 bcf) by 2018-2019, and the production sharing contracts to 20.5 bcm (724 bcf).
