Indonesia oil well fire deaths rise to 21

JAKARTA, April 27, 2018 – The death toll from Wednesday’s oil well fire in Indonesia has risen to 21, international media reported Thursday.

The fire on the illegal oil well rose about 70 metres in the air, destroying several houses and injuring dozens. Firefighters put out the blaze Thursday.

“The fire has been extinguished now. […] We are still monitoring the injured and the situation at the accident,” AFP quoted Henny Nurmayani, an official at Aceh’s disaster mitigation agency, as saying.

Local authorities suggested the fire may have been caused by pipe welding or smoking at the site in Aceh. Local communities commonly drill such oil wells in the Aceh region.
