Rouhani at GECF

Iran boosting gas export capacity

Iran

TEHRAN, November 25, 2015 – Iran will greatly expand its capacity to export natural gas, President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday.

Speaking at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Tehran, Rouhani said Iran is “ready to play a bigger role in the supply of gas.”

“I invite the leaders of the countries in this group to partner with Iran and invest in developing Iran’s gas resources for mutual benefit,” he said.

Monday’s forum was attended by a number of heads of state from major hydrocarbons-producing countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and recently elected Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

GECF ministerial and High Level Ad Hoc Group meetings were held in Tehran ahead of Monday’s summit.

The GECF was created in 2001 and formalised in 2008 with the aim of protecting the sovereign rights of gas-exporting countries and enhancing co-operation between them.
