Libya reports three new oil and gas discoveries

TRIPOLI, April 9, 2026 – Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) has made new oil and gas discoveries with Eni, Repsol and Sonatrach in the country’s offshore and onshore basins, NOC announced in separate statements on Wednesday.

In Block D offshore western Libya, NOC and Eni North Africa drilled the J1-4/16 exploration well to about 3,188 metres, with two tests producing flow rates of 396,000 cubic metres (14 mcf) and 680,000 cubic metres (24 mcf) per day. NOC said the drilling of J1-4/16 completes the partners’ contractual obligations of nine wells under their June 2008 agreement.

In the Murzuq Basin, located about 800 kilometres south of Tripoli, NOC and Repsol Libya Branch drilled the J1-4/130 well in Contract Area 131/130 to a depth of approximately 1,318 metres. The well is producing an average of 763 bopd from the Mummiyat Formation and is the fifth out of an eight-well commitment.

Finally, NOC announced an oil and gas discovery in Contract Area 95/96 in Libya’s Ghadames Basin, about 70 kilometres from the Wafa field. The A1-69/02 exploration well, drilled alongside operator Sonatrach Petroleum Exploration and Production Corporation Libya Branch, reached 2,573 metres and is producing at a rate of 368,000 cubic metres (13 mcf) of gas and 327 barrels of condensate per day from the Awynat Wanin and Awyn Kaza formations. It is the sixth of eight planned wells.
