MHTL scales back Trinidad operation

PORT OF SPAIN, March 6, 2017 – On Friday, Methanol Holdings Trinidad (MHTL) confirmed that two of its five methanol plants on the Point Lisas Industrial site would be shut down due to insufficient gas supplies.

Following five years of negotiations with the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, MHTL was unable to secure an adequate volume of gas feedstock to operate all five of its plants.

Speaking to the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, an MHTL spokesman said, “Even after exhaustive negotiations and exploring possible supply alternatives, unfortunately, we now have no option but to close two of our plants.”

Some of the company’s methanol plants have been running at less than 50% of capacity since the third quarter of 2016. Last year, the country’s overall methanol production saw a decrease due to instability resulting from shrinking production off the country’s coast.
