Nigeria’s Buhari to leave oil post open

ABUJA, October 12, 2015 – A spokesman for Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed that the Nigerian president will not take the top post at the country’s oil ministry, as was previously planned.

The position of oil minister will remain vacant as Buhari supervises the ministry.

“There will be no petroleum minister. Maybe he will appoint a minister of state, which is a junior minister,” the spokesman told Bloomberg on Monday.

Buhari holds responsibility for nominating the country’s next roster of ministers. The senate will vote on his  first group of candidates on Tuesday.

In September, Buhari told Reuters that he would assume the post of oil minister. The president has promised sweeping changes to the country’s oil and gas industry.
