Tanzania launches $1.33-bln gas project

DAR ES SALAAM, October 12, 2015 – The Tanzanian government has launched a $1.33-billion project to build a natural gas pipeline to Dar es Salaam.

The president’s office said on Sunday that the pipeline would aid in easing power shortages in the country’s commercial capital.

The pipeline will run 532 kilometres from Mtwara, a coastal city near the Mnazi Bay and Songo Songo gasfields.

The government plans to build gas processing plants at Lindi, Kinyerezi and Mtwara as part of the project.

The development is mainly financed through a loan of around $1.23 billion from the Export-Import Bank of China, and the pipeline is expected to be built by Chinese contractors.

The government of Tanzania aims to add 2 GW of gas-generated power to the country’s capacity by 2018.
