Oman mandates operators reduce flaring

MUSCAT, April 23, 2015 – Oman has said it is mandating companies to find methods for reducing gas flaring, as major international oil businesses and several oil-producing nations committed to eradicating routine gas flaring by 2030.
Oman’s ministry of oil and gas has said efforts to reduce gas flaring have shown progress.
“Gas flaring has reduced because we are mandating the companies to […] reduce it as much as possible by proposing different solutions,” Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Oil and Gas, was reported as saying on the sidelines of the first Middle East Oilfield Produced Water Management Conference.
The undersecretary added that conversion into LNG or compressing the gas and using it again for power generation are some of the options that have been presented to utilise natural gas that is flared as a by-product of upstream oil operations.
“However, it has a higher cost. The cost is always a challenge with reducing gas flaring,” he told the Times of Oman.
