Pemex commits to sustainability plan
MEXICO CITY, October 30, 2017 – Mexican NOC Pemex is targeting a 25% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2021, the company announced at an Oil and Gas Climate Initiative meeting on Sunday.
The meeting in London gathered top executives from the world’s 10 largest hydrocarbons companies, including BP, Total, Saudi Aramco, Shell and other super-majors. Pemex was the only Latin American company to participate.
“We are going to work with these companies to have a target of almost zero methane emissions across the entire gas chain, and this is very important because gas is a cleaner fuel, but methane is a greenhouse gas,” said Pemex CEO Jose Antonio Gonzalez Anaya.
According to a press release, Gonzalez Anaya discussed the company’s sustainability strategy in the context of its Business Plan 2017-2021. Under this five-year programme, the NOC will seek to reduce gas flaring at shallow-water operations, rehabilitate offshore compression modules and promote low-emission technologies.
Downstream, the company will make efforts to optimise its refining processes and increase energy efficiency. This includes cutting water use in refineries by 60%.
