Sempra targets June start-up for Mexico LNG exports

SAN DIEGO, May 8, 2026 – Us energy firm Sempra expects its Energia Costa Azul (ECA) LNG export terminal in Mexico to begin production in June 2026, Argus reported on Thursday.

Located north of Ensenada in Baja California, Mexico, the single-train liquefaction facility began receiving feedgas on April 20, 2026, but has yet to produce LNG. Sempra expects the facility, which has a nameplate production capacity of 3.25 million tonnes per year (tpy), to deliver first LNG in June, ahead of completion later in the summer.

Under its licence with the US Department of Energy, the project has until September 21, 2026, to begin exports.

ECA LNG will re-export natural gas sourced mainly from the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico. The facility has 20-year offtake agreements with TotalEnergies and Mitsui for a total of 2.5 million tpy.

Sempra develops energy infrastructure across North America, with operations spanning LNG export terminals, natural gas pipelines and electric utilities. In Mexico, the company operates through its subsidiary Sempra Infrastructure, which focuses on LNG, renewables and cross-border energy projects.
