Pemex reboots Lakach gasfield development

Pemex has signed a service contract with US gas player New Fortress Energy to restart production at the Lakach field in the Gulf of Mexico, the Mexican NOC announced on Monday.

Production is expected to begin in Q1 2024, with an average capacity of 300 mcf (8.5 mcm) per day expected over a 10-year period.

The deepwater non-associated gasfield is located 90 kilometres from Port of Veracruz and holds reserves of around 900 bcf (25.5 bcm).

Subsequently, the NOC signed a commercialization contract that will see 190 mcf (5.38 mcm) per day delivered to New Fortress Energy while Pemex will retain the remaining 110 mcf (3.12 mcm) per day for Mexican consumption.

The government approved the USD 1.79-billion project at the beginning of November 2022.

Previously, Pemex signed a long-term strategic partnership with New Fortress Energy to develop the play in June 2022.

Adjacent deposits are expected to contain three times the reserves found at the Lakach field, which are being considered for development.
