Pengassan suspends Nigeria-wide strike

LAGOS, December 19, 2017 – The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (Pengassan) will suspend the strike it began Monday, the union’s secretary general told the media the same day.

“The strike has not been suspended for now but we are 100% sure it will be suspended,” general secretary Lumumba Okugbawa told Reuters, adding that the union had obtained its goals in talks with the government and Neconde Energy.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment had asked the group to postpone the strike and participate in talks beginning the second week of January to resolve the conflict over layoffs by domestic companies and marginal field operators. Representatives of the union met with Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige Wednesday and Thursday last week.
