Petrobras starts production at Brazil’s Búzios 6 FPSO
RIO DE JANEIRO, January 5, 2026 – Brazil’s Petrobras has launched production from the P-78 FPSO at the Búzios 6 site in the Santos Basin pre-salt, the company said on Wednesday.
The P-78 unit has a production capacity of 180,000 bopd and 7.2 mcm of gas per day, bringing Búzios field capacity to around 1.15 million boepd. Gas will be exported via the ROTA 3 pipeline, boosting Brazil’s supply by up to 3 mcm per day. Petrobras targets producing 2.5 million bopd in 2026, with Búzios playing a central role.
The FPSO was developed under a new platform design incorporating lessons from previous pre-salt projects to improve safety and efficiency. It includes emissions-reduction systems such as exhaust gas recovery and energy integration technologies. Built partially in Brazil, it includes 10 locally manufactured modules.
The Búzios 6 project includes 13 wells with smart completions and uses both rigid and flexible pipelines for production and export. The 345-metre-long platform is the seventh unit operating in the Búzios field, which surpassed 1 million bopd in 2025 and lies 180 kilometres offshore at over 2,000 metres depth.
Petrobras is Brazil’s state-controlled energy company and a global leader in ultra-deepwater oil production. Its operations focus on exploration and production, refining, natural gas and power, with key assets in the pre-salt Santos and Campos basins.
